The first intelligible words spoken by five-year-old Emily, severely autistic from birth, were, “I wuv you horsie!” It was music to her parents’ ears as they followed advice from a special education teacher and counselor to enroll Emily in a hippotherapy program. The first lesson was difficult, as Emily flailed in fear, but when taken off the horse, she suddenly grabbed the horse’s leg and hugged it tightly.

“Thank heavens the expert staff and Shadow— the most amazingly calm horse I’ve ever seen—knew how to handle her,” Emily’s mother told us.

“After the second lesson, those magic first words Emily uttered out loud, as she once again reached out and hugged Shadow, were the most beautiful words I’ve ever heard,” Emily’s mother continued. “How ironic that a horse named Shadow shone a light in Emily’s life that sent all the darkness away. What a blessing the horse trainers, therapists, volunteers have given us.”
